What You'll Study
Paper 1 — Air Navigation+
- General navigation: the Earth, direction, distance, speed and time
- Charts, projections, map reading and plotting
- Dead reckoning, position lines and fixing position
- Flight planning: fuel, time and route calculations
- Radio navigation aids: VOR, DME, ADF and GPS
- Instrument navigation and use of the navigation computer
Paper 2 — Meteorology+
- The atmosphere: composition, temperature, pressure and density
- Wind, its causes and effects on flight
- Clouds, precipitation, fog and visibility
- Air masses, fronts and weather systems
- Aviation weather hazards: thunderstorms, icing, turbulence, windshear
- Weather reports, charts and forecasts (METAR, TAF)
Paper 3 — Air Regulations+
- International air law: ICAO and its annexes
- National regulations: DGCA, the Aircraft Act and rules
- Rules of the air and right-of-way
- Airspace classification and structure
- Flight rules (VFR / IFR) and flight planning requirements
- Licensing, documentation and airworthiness requirements
Paper 4 — Technical General+
- Principles of flight and basic aerodynamics
- Aircraft structures, controls and systems
- Piston and gas-turbine engines and their systems
- Aircraft instruments: pitot-static and gyroscopic
- Electrical, fuel, hydraulic and landing-gear systems
- Airframe, powerplant and systems limitations
Paper 5 — Radio Telephony (RTR)+
- Standard R/T phraseology and communication procedures
- Communication with Air Traffic Control (ATC)
- Call signs, readbacks and message format
- Distress, urgency and emergency communications
- Radio equipment, frequencies and propagation basics
- Preparation for the RTR (Aero) practical & oral exam
