UDAN Scheme & North India's Airport Boom — Why Punjab Students Must Enter Aviation Now

June 20257 min readBy Auden Aviation Academy

If you're a student in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, or Jammu & Kashmir, there has never been a better time to build a career in aviation. A combination of India's landmark UDAN Regional Connectivity Scheme and a wave of new and expanded airports across North India is creating thousands of new aviation jobs — right at your doorstep.

What is the UDAN Scheme?

UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) is the Government of India's flagship aviation policy launched in 2016 with one goal: make flying affordable and accessible for every Indian. Under UDAN, the government provides Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to airlines operating on regional routes, enabling them to offer capped-fare tickets on Tier-2 and Tier-3 city routes.

The results have been transformative. India's airport network has more than doubled — from 74 airports in 2014 to 159 airports in 2024. The modified UDAN scheme announced in Budget 2025-26 plans to connect 120 additional destinations, carry 4 crore more passengers over the next decade, and revive 13 airports with ₹540 crore in fresh funding.

North India's Airport Expansion — What's Happening Near You

For students based in Punjab and the surrounding region, here's what's happening at airports within reach:

️ Halwara International Airport, Ludhiana (IATA: HWR) — BRAND NEW

This is the biggest aviation news for Punjab in decades. Halwara Airport was inaugurated by PM Modi in February 2026 and Air India has announced two daily flights to Delhi starting May 2026, with connections to UK and Europe on a single ticket. This is Punjab's industrial heartland finally getting air connectivity — and it needs hundreds of trained ground staff, cabin crew, and operations professionals to make it run.

️ Adampur Airport, Jalandhar

Right here in Jalandhar's backyard. Adampur is one of Punjab's UDAN-covered airports with active flight operations. Its expansion and growing passenger traffic is directly creating local aviation employment opportunities for trained students from Jalandhar and surrounding districts.

️ Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar

Amritsar is North India's most internationally connected airport, with direct flights to the UK, Canada, UAE, Singapore and Southeast Asia. It handles massive NRI traffic and is a key hub for IndiGo, Air India, and international carriers. Ground operations, customer service, and ramp roles here are in constant demand.

️ Chandigarh International Airport

Serving the Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula tricity, this airport handles both domestic and international traffic. Expansion plans and growing passenger numbers make it a strong employment hub for North India aviation professionals.

️ Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi

India's busiest airport and one of the top 10 globally. Delhi is within 4–5 hours of Jalandhar and is the single largest employer of aviation professionals in North India. Most students from Punjab who train professionally land their first jobs at Delhi — whether with ground handlers like AISL, Bird Group or Celebi, or with airlines directly.

️ Sheikh ul Alam International Airport, Srinagar

With J&K's tourism booming and air travel to Srinagar growing year-on-year, this airport is seeing significant expansion in flights and passenger traffic. Trained aviation professionals from the region are highly sought after here.

️ Gaggal Airport, Dharamshala (Kangra)

Serving Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, and the Kangra Valley, Gaggal Airport connects one of India's most popular tourist destinations. Growing tourism and UDAN connectivity is steadily increasing operations — and with it, local aviation job demand.

What This Means for You — Jobs Being Created Right Now

Every new airport or expanded terminal requires:

  • Ground handling staff — check-in agents, ramp agents, baggage handlers
  • Customer service executives — airline desks, lounge management
  • Cabin crew — airlines expanding fleets need trained crew urgently
  • AVSEC and safety personnel — mandatory at every airport
  • Operations and administration — station managers, duty officers

With Halwara coming online, Adampur growing, Amritsar handling record international traffic, and Delhi constantly hiring — students from Punjab who are professionally trained have a massive geographic advantage that students from South or West India simply don't have.
